If you have a smelly issue and want to know if you can use essential oils instead of deodorant, boy are you in for a treat. There are many, many things you can do with essential oils relating to deodorant. If you didn’t know, essential oils already make the base for some of your favorite smelling deodorants. The next time you go to the store or put on deodorant, check the label.

You will almost certainly find an essential oil somewhere in the product. What this means is that if you want a cheaper alternative to some of these expensive deodorants, you will want to start with essential oils as a base.

How to Use Essential Oils to Replace (or Compliment) Your Deodorant

The Easiest Way to Start

If you do not smell very much naturally and just want to smell nice, the easiest way to start using essential oils instead of deodorant is to put some in a spray bottle with some water. Then, spray it under your arms and where ever else you want to smell nice. Many perfumes use essential oils (neat, or undiluted), in their ingredient list. But, you probably do not need something that strong if you are looking for a deodorant, which is why we recommend that you use your essential oils undiluted.

My Favorite Odor Fighting Essential Oil

As far as actual odor fighting properties go, you will want to go with tea tree oil, which has been shown to have antibacterial properties. When it comes to deodorants what you need to keep in mind is that what makes you smell is the bacteria which clean to your underarm wetness. Keep in mind that while you can find bottles of tea tree oil in various stores, what you’re buying is usually a combination of other oils, and a little bit of tea tree oil. Essentially, by making sure to use diluted tea tree essential oil, you’ll have something strong than what you would buy off the shelf for a few dollars.

Anything that inhibits the bacteria growth will make you smell less as well. This is why tea tree oil is a great base for any sort of essential oils instead of deodorant that you want to try out. If you just want to smell good, then diluting any essential oil that you like to smell in a small spray bottle and spraying it under your arms will work just fine. However, you do have other options.

Additives for Your Essential Oils Deodorant

There are many other natural deodorants such as baking soda and alum salts. With baking soda, you need to be careful because it will damage your skin if you use too much at once. However, it does work really well as a deodorant. Some people will buy unscented deodorants and then put a few drops of their favorite essential oil on top.

You have many different choices when it comes to essential oil instead of deodorant. Because you are mostly using them to smell you can choose whatever you like. Many people enjoy adding a lavender essential oil base to their deodorant because besides smelling it also keeps bugs away.

One idea is that you may want to try out is a roll on bottle for your essential oil. With the milder essential oils, you can actually just roll them onto your under arms when you want to freshen up a bit. It’s an easy way to take your essential oils with you. There is also small spray on bottles you can buy or get from the beauty counter at your local store. Once you’re done with your tester sample, refill the bottle with your essential oil of choice and you’ll be good to go.

While you can make your own natural deodorant, that is a bit out of the scope of this article. There are many natural deodorants that use essential oils, but I typically prefer to make my own. You don’t know the exact ratio of ingredients. This is especially true with natural deodorants that include baking soda, as I am particularly sensitive to using it.

A good rule of them when looking at the ingredients list for a natural deodorant, is that the ingredient that is used the most, will be listed first, with the rest of the ingredients listed in decreasing order. Therefore, I suggest buying tea tree essential oil rather than something labeled tea tree oil in the store. In the latter, tree tea oil could literally be the fifth or sixth ingredient listed on the bottle. There’s no telling how much (or little) tea tree oil is in the bottle.

Before you go crazy and start blending all your essential oils together, there is one thing you should keep in mind. A few citrus-based essential oils are phototoxic. This means that they will spoil and start to smell worse when exposed to a lot of sunlight. You do not want to use these essential oils instead of deodorant. Unless you will be wearing a sleeved shirt that will block out the sunlight all day. Lemon essential oils sure smell good, but after they have been exposed to some UV light for a few hours, this isn’t the case anymore. Additionally, if it’s winter time, you don’t need to worry about this as much. As the sun tends to be weaker in the winter time.

Vetiver, patchouli, or sandalwood essential oils all make for great essential oil deodorants. Of course, combining them with tea tree oil is always a great idea. If you have sensitive skin, you will want to be sure to dilute your essential oil deodorant with a carrier oil. Developing a skin sensitivity is never fun, but it happens to many people all the time if they aren’t careful.

Using essential oils to help stop underarm odor is a lot easier than it looks. Your two main options are to combine essential oils with your homemade deodorant. Or, you can spritz or roll-on diluted essential oils before you use antiperspirant (if that’s your thing)
