8 Basic tips to traveling in Thunderstorms to save yourself

Although Thunderstorms are considered to be a beautiful display of clouds and lighting followed by rain and cold weather they can be a lot of hassle especially when you are in the middle of a traveling expedition. Here are 8 basic tips to save yourself from a drastic experience while traveling if you are caught up in a lighting storm.

  1. Find A Shelter:

serif;”>Probably the immediate step that you can take to protect yourself from the effects of a thunderstorm is to find a nearby shelter as quickly as possible. Even if it is a stray building or just a covered piece of concrete with roof it can serve as the perfect shelter from the storm. You can begin traveling again when the storm starts to settle down after a while

  1. Stay Away From Poles:

Avoid standing near the long telephone poles and corded telephone booths. They can be quite dangerous especially during an ongoing thunderstorm and can cause a wave of electric shock if you accidentally touch them. If you are outside try standing away from them.

  1. Stay Away From Long Trees:

While setting off on a camping expedition and caught up in a thunderstorm avoid standing near the long trees as they might collapse and cause serious damage. Try to get out of the forest as soon as you start to feel that there is a storm coming. If somehow, you are unable to do that just don’t panic. Try looking for shelters in small-sized trees or wooden pods/huts.

  1. Get In The Car:

While traveling if you find yourself caught up in a thunderstorm park your car in the side but not under a signboard or a tree. Roll up the windows and turn off the Radio. Do not touch anything metallic in the car and just rest there till the storm starts to rest.

  1. Take Care of Your Eyes And Ears:

As the storm approaches and you are outside in your car or under a shelter close your eyes to avoid blindness or to get hit by anything, just sit down and put hands on your ears to avoid the thundering sounds of the storm. Once it starts to settle down you can open your eyes and remove the hands from your ears.

  1. Wear Good Clothing:

If you get to know about a storm on the day you plan to travel it is best to postpone it to another day. However, if it is inevitable then make sure that you wear best quality boots and a solid pair of jeans with shirt and even keep a raincoat with you as well.

  1. Stand On A Sheet:

Try standing on a sleeping bag or a wet sheet when the storm approaches so that you may not have to stand on a wet ground. In this way you can save yourself from falling into a pit or on a muddy surface caused by heavy rainfall.

  1. Stay Away From Metal:

Since lighting storm generally falls heavy on metallic objects try to avoid them at all costs. Do not stand near metal pipes, remove any metallic jewelry and do not touch the metal fences and conductors.
