Traveling With Pet: Tips to Keep Everyone Stress – Free
Since pets are very much a part of the family, they deserve to experience life along with the two-legged members of the family. Therefore
when it’s time to go on vacation, you may want to take the furry member of your family along with you. While it’s easy to make your home pet friendly and comfortable for your small or large companion, traveling with your dog adds a few new elements for pet owners to navigate. Learn how to do so with as much ease as possible by following the tips listed below:
Ensure Their Health And Safety:
Before leaving for vacation, have your dog examined by a trusted vet. Also, ensure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and you have all the records. When you are traveling wit pet via an airline, you will need to have these records to prove the health of your dog. A crate is typically required for airline travel. To find out what else is required, contact your specific airline company.
Tips For Choosing the Right Crate for Your Pet:
As mentioned above, crating is almost always necessary for airline traveling with pet. However, it’s also ideal and beneficial for car travel as well. A crate can also be utilized to safely house your pet when you get to your destination. Therefore, choosing the right crate for your pet is a must. It’s a good idea to get your pet used to their crate at home before traveling, so don’t put this off until time to leave for vacation. Get them used to this arrangement early. The following are some general guidelines for choosing a crate when you are ready:
- Your pet should be able to stand up, lie down and turn around while in their crate.
- Ensure the handles and grips are strong on the crate to make it easier to transport.
- Make sure there is ventilation on more than one side of the crate.
- Bring along a favorite toy and comfortable mat within the crate. Label the crate “live animal” along with your pet’s name, address and phone number (for plane travel).
Tips For Traveling With Your Crated Pet:
Here are a few recommendations for keeping your dog happy in their crate:
- Ensure your dog has been exercised before going into their crate. Just imagine how you would feel cooped up in a crate for hours before you had a chance to stretch your legs.
- Make sure to remove a loose collar or leash or anything else that could cause your dog harm while inside their crate.
- Don’t force your dog in the crate, encourage them to go in on their own. You do this by getting them comfortable with the idea of crating. Remember, it isn’t a prison. Don’t act sad or like you are imprisoning your child when you place your dog in their crate. Just like a child, your pet will pick up on your guilt and use it to their advantage.
- Crate your dog, then come back and take them out. This will teach your dog you will be back and that they don’t have to panic. Do this several times before you leave for your trip.
- If you’re driving, take frequent breaks. Get your pet out of their crate. Let them walk around and use the bathroom. Feed them small amounts of food. Avoid large meals when traveling with pet as it can lead to motion sickness. When traveling on an airplane, avoid feeding your dog at all for at least six hours prior. Do make sure they have water, though and stay hydrated.
- Ensure your pet is getting proper ventilation while in the car and is kept cool and comfortable.
The tips listed above are just a few ways to make your whole family’s — pets included– traveling experience less stressful and more fun. Remember above all else, enjoy creating lasting memories with your pet as that is the end goal
