So you have Australia Travel Tips

Lots of tourists head down to Australia every year to take in all its tourist attractions such as its wild animals, the great barrier reef, Sydney’s opera house, and lots more. If that’s you, then there a quite a few things you need to take note of as you plan your trip. Here are 7 Australian travel tips for you.

Shopping

  • Currency

First, you should note that the currency used in Australia is the Australian Dollars (AUD). If you plan to do a lot of shopping

it is best to either convert your cash to AUD first as other currencies would not be accepted in the stores, or you can withdraw directly from the ATMs available there which is more advisable as you would get a good exchange rate. Many stores also accept Credit Cards such as American Express, UnionPay, and VISA and MasterCard.

  • Budgeting

Australia can be very expensive, so it is important that you budget properly before embarking on your journey.

  • If you are going to be traveling or going out a lot, it is best to get a bus pass as this would help save you money which you can then channel towards more shopping.
  • Rather than staying in a nice hotel which would generally cost you $100+/night, you can try out an Airbnb accommodation. It is usually comfortable and can be a fun experience, especially if you’re traveling as a family or with friends.
  • Also, tipping in restaurants, hotels, and bars is not a common practice in Australia. The staff don’t rely on tips so don’t feel too bad when you’d rather save a dollar or two.

GST Refunds

Lastly, don’t forget to claim back a refund of 10 percent for Goods and Service Tax (GST). This is applicable if you are spending less than 60 days in Australia and you have spent AUD$300 or more at a certain store, then you may be able to claim back a refund for the GST on your goods at the time of your departure. So, don’t shy away from those large purchases!

Stay Safe

  • Wildlife

There are a number of beautiful wild animals in Australia, and it’s really an experience to see them, but you also have to be conscious of your safety around. If you’re visiting Brisbane where kangaroos are known to roam, make sure you speak to the locals to find out the appropriate behavior around then. You’ll also need special gears and passes such as a 4WD vehicle and a beach permit to access the Main Beach Foreshore area if you’d like to enjoy a weekend camping on Stradbroke Island.

In general, stay along the tracks when bushwalking. Don’t wander off trying to explore all on your own, this is a recipe for disaster as you can get injured or even lost.

  • Transportation

If you are not driving yourself or taking a bus, make sure to use a registered taxi. Find out what taxis are operating in the area you are staying beforehand. so that you don’t get stranded.

If you are driving, take note of the speed limits on the roads. The speed limits are represented in Kilometers per hour (KPH) rather than miles per hour(MPH) and there are different speed limits around schools, so, watch out! You don’t want to get a speeding ticket! Also, plan out routes before embarking on your journey. It is quite possible to get lost if you do not know where you’re going.

Getting Online

  • Using free Wi-Fi

When traveling, most tourists like to use free Wi-Fi whenever it’s available in stations and restaurants. But this convenience comes with a hefty cost – any other person on the same network can access your data – your passwords, credit card details, and other important information with some basic tapping gear in what’s called a Man-In-The-Middle attack. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) saves you from all that worry by encrypting your data, shielding your tracks from potential hackers in proximity.

  • Accessing content from home

If you’re a frequent traveler, you might have experienced bank account freezes when you try to access it abroad, or restricted email access because the service provider recognizes your login as a hacking attempt. These are all frustrating inconveniences. To spoof your location, simply change your IP address to that of your home country. Using a VPN in Australia also allows you to access Netflix or geo-restricted Sports streaming services as if you’re at home.
