Air Purification – Improving Your Health by Eliminating Molds

People think that molds are not harmful, but they can be the main reason for many of your health and respiratory problems.

Installing air purifiers to combat molds in your home is an investment for better air quality and overall health.

What are molds?

Molds are fungal growths caused by excessive moisture. They are present everywhere. In an indoor environment

molds form in surfaces that are not completely dried. Your kitchen sink, bathroom, and basement are common places where molds thrive. Damp fabrics such as towels are also dwelling places for molds. They can also be present in old clothes and shoes, and can even develop in old food. Structural problems in homes can cause water leakages that lead to mold formation.

Health Risks posed by Molds

Molds do not affect many people, but some experience health problems because of these. Molds release spores that move through the air and are not visible to the naked eye. You only see molds when they form into clusters. These mold clusters are visible in old foods such as bread and cheeses.
Mold spores become allergens that can cause several health issues.

Some people get allergies when they come in contact with molds. Their skin and eyes get irritated easily. Some complain of headaches, too.
People with compromised immune systems can develop lung infections from molds. They may even suffer from other respiratory illnesses such as asthma and COPD. Those who are sensitive to molds also experience symptoms of coughing and wheezing. Even if you are not sensitive to molds, you may develop allergies from long term exposure to these.

You can take preventive measures at home by thorough cleaning and drying of surfaces. There are a variety of disinfectants that are effective in getting rid of molds. You also need to check and fix leaks in pipes and roofs to prevent accumulation of water. Stagnant water helps in mold formation. You can aerate your home and introduce more ventilation.

But mold spores are always present in the air. Even when you clean surfaces that have molds, mold spores become airborne. Molds can also enter your home through open windows and doors.

Air purifiers to combat molds

To help control molds in the air, experts recommend using air purifiers. These devices get rid of all kinds of particles such as dust floating in the air, toxic chemicals and unpleasant odors, and are effective in removing mold spores.

There are different types of air purifiers to combat molds. HEPA(High-Efficiency Particulate Arresting) purifiers filter microscopic particles from the air. Those that use UV light kill spores that enter the air purification system. Air purifiers that use  carbon neutralize odors caused by molds. A single type of air purifier may not be successful enough in removing all air pollutants in the air. Experts suggest a combination of air purifiers to combat molds to be effective in eliminating most air pollutants.

It is very important that you use air purifiers to combat molds and be very vigilant in preventing mold growths in your home. Even with an air purifier running, mold spores can come from surfaces that already have growing molds.

Mold spores may also come from outside. These make it harder to remove molds from the air completely.

Molds don’t affect many people, but those who are sensitive to molds need to take extra measures to safeguard their health. Installing air purifiers to combat molds in your home is an investment for better air quality and overall health
